Selected Topics in Employment Law

Wednesday, July 11

  • 7:00 AM PDT
New York, NY

This informative program will address employment law matters and will focus on three topics:

  1. Special Issues in Accommodating Pregnant Employees Employers who are notified that an employee is pregnant face tricky issues related to accommodating that employee's pregnancy and planning for that employee's absence, particularly in New York City, which provides pregnant employees with elevated protection. This portion of the program provides practical advice in dealing with such issues as they arise in the workplace.
  2. Hiring and Pre-Employment Inquiries: What you can and cannot ask. Federal and state laws impose substantial restrictions on the questions employers can ask of job applicants, based upon legal protections prohibiting employment discrimination for a wide variety of classifications. Many of these restrictions are counter-intuitive. This portion of the program analyzes what you can and cannot ask a job applicant.
  3. Religious Accommodation: What is an Employer's Burden? Employers are being increasingly faced with a wide variety of requests for accommodation of the religious beliefs of their employees, including time off and requests to wear certain clothing, accessories and even weapons prescribed by the employee's religious beliefs. This portion of the program discusses an employer's burden in accommodating the religious beliefs of its employees.
