In recent times, employers with businesses located near the Gulf Coast have endured twisters, hurricanes, flooding and freezes. Inclement weather and natural disasters can interrupt or impact business, disrupt the lives of employees, clients and customers, and make it difficult to manage the workplace. In this breakfast briefing, we will share practical and legal guidance on the following issues:

  • Wage and hour pitfalls during and after natural disasters
  • Rule differences for public employees versus private employees during weather events
  • Employee discipline for failure to report to work
  • Safety laws at issue during a weather situation
  • Policies regarding the donation of vacation time by coworkers
  • Reasonable accommodations (including leaves of absence) under the ADA, FMLA and company policies
