Littler’s Alan L. McLaughlin Awarded 2013 Pro Bono and Public Service Award by the 7th Circuit Bar Association

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (May 14, 2013) – Alan L. McLaughlin, office managing shareholder in the Indianapolis office of Littler Mendelson, P.C. (Littler), the world’s largest employment and labor law firm representing management, has been awarded the 7th Circuit Bar Association Award for pro bono and public service in the U.S. District Courts of Indiana. McLaughlin was honored at the association’s annual meeting held last week in Indianapolis.

McLaughlin has volunteered hours of his time to the Mediation Assistance Program (MAP) of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana since the program’s inception in 2009. Through this initiative, attorney volunteers are given the opportunity to provide quality pro bono work to pro se litigants unfamiliar with court procedures and the law by representing the litigants at court-sponsored settlement conferences. McLaughlin’s work with MAP has included making presentations, recruiting volunteers, providing training to new attorney participants and representing pro se plaintiffs in settlement conferences.

“We congratulate Al on this honor,” said Tom Bender and Jeremy Roth, co-presidents and co-managing directors of Littler, in a joint statement. “At Littler, we are committed to giving back to our communities and fully support the efforts and contributions of our attorneys, who provide legal assistance to those with the greatest need. We applaud Al for his extraordinary efforts in volunteering countless hours on behalf of the Mediation Assistance Program.”

Nominations for the 7th Circuit Award were accepted for any attorney who had been court-appointed or otherwise taken on civil or criminal federal court matters on behalf of those in need, regardless of whether the work involved written advocacy, oral advocacy or both. Nominations could be of an attorney, group, firm or other organization. The criteria for the award included a significant pro bono or public service undertaking involving federal court litigation and practice as the highest degree of excellence and ethics, according to the bar association.

With a nationwide practice that focuses on representing management in employment-related issues of all kinds, McLaughlin has specific expertise with discrimination actions, class actions, wage and hour collective actions, arbitrations and emergency proceedings involving non-compete agreements, trade secrets, business torts and contracts. He is rated AV Preeminent in the Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review Ratings™ and is consistently listed in Best Lawyers in America and Chambers USA.

McLaughlin received his J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School and his A.B. from Wabash College.
