Bullying and harassment in schools continues as a serious challenge for educational institutions nationwide. The National Institute of Health reports that one out of every four students has been bullied at school and that one out of every five students admit to being a bully. In this environment, faculty and administrators cannot stand idly by and allow bullying to occur. To prevent liability, schools at all levels must take reasonable measures to make themselves safe for their students.

This program will highlight the most pressing compliance and security issues for employers, particularly in light of the Department of Education’s new anti-bullying guidelines, and provide practical recommendations for safeguarding students and responding effectively to incidents of bullying and violence at schools.

Some of the key topics to be addressed include:

  • Anti-bullying protections
  • Bully-related conduct that is prohibited
  • Areas where the law prohibits bullying now – or may in the near future
  • Breaking down the Department of Education’s New Anti-Bullying Guidelines
  • Consequences of bullying – from liability to criminality
  • Case law addressing liability for bully-related conduct
  • Warning Signs
    • From bullying to violence
    • Threat assessment strategies
  • Security Concerns
    • The factors about schools, buildings and occupants which create vulnerability
    • Campus and classroom security
    • Concerns and strategies regarding ultra-violence
  • Best Practices:
    • Practical training approaches to help identify and minimize bullying, cyber-bullying and harassment
    • Zero tolerance under related Codes and Policies
    • Appropriate response, documentation and reporting procedures
    • Effective Response Plans
    • Post-Incident Considerations

This program will be presented by Kevin O’Neill, Senior Counsel with the Learning Group of Littler Mendelson, the nation’s largest employment and labor law firm and Erroll Southers, the Managing Director of TAL Global, an international Security & Risk Management firm. From warning signs to security concerns to liability risks, Messrs. O’Neill and Southers will review the changing landscape of an all too alarming reality faced by today’s educational institutions.
