We are hounded with questions of employer obligations, legitimacy (addressing the growing trend of fraudulent service dogs) and individuals’ rights on a daily basis. Littler attorneys, in tandem with the leading provider of assistance dogs for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities, Canine Companions for Independence®, will discuss obligations under both the employment and public accommodations provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). We will also address some facts and myths regarding service animals, and will review Canine Companions’ extensive assistance dog training and puppy raising programs that result in graduating specially trained labradors, golden retrievers and lab golden crosses that can perform advanced tasks for their human charges.

The ADA permits legitimate assistance dogs to accompany people with disabilities in all areas where members of the public are allowed to go. But a service dog is more than a vest — businesses and employers have rights too when it comes to appropriate behavioral standards and service dog fraud. And of course, no session like this would be complete without a demonstration of the advanced commands a Canine Companions assistance dog provides for its human partner!
