Workers are on the move! Over the past year, millions of employees have shifted to work from home, and many have relocated or plan to relocate. But do employers know where their workers are or how to manage them?

As the pandemic reaches the one-year mark, employers are faced with the reality that many of their employees now prefer to work from home or other jurisdictions – often without approval or any concrete plans to return. But remote work is not as simple as a weekly Zoom check-in call. Employers must carefully manage expense reimbursement, timekeeping, leave, accommodations, and the ability to recall workers to the office as needed. Importantly, most employment law requirements are based on the geographic location of the worker. If remote work has led to employee relocation, employers are confronted with a multitude of employment law compliance challenges, including state income tax withholding, unemployment insurance, workers compensation, wage and hour law, training, and leave and benefits.

Littler attorneys will present a lively discussion of best practices for remote work, wandering workers, and balancing flexibility with compliance.
