Agentic AI represents the next frontier in artificial intelligence. Where traditional AI tools provided information to human users to act on, AI agents can autonomously plan, make decisions, interact with systems, and execute multi-step tasks with limited-to-zero human involvement. From analyzing data and initiating workflows to communicating with customers and making operational decisions, agentic AI promises dramatic gains in efficiency, speed, and scalability.
But as AI systems move from advising humans to acting on their behalf, organizations face a fundamental question: how much autonomy is too much?
This program will explore the necessary tension between the business benefits of autonomous AI and the legal, compliance, and governance risks that accompany it. The same characteristics that make AI agents powerful, namely their ability to take unsupervised action, can also create significant legal exposure when an agent makes a mistake, violates a policy, mishandles data, or takes actions that could be attributable to the organization itself. As AI agents increasingly function as digital employees, organizations must grapple with issues of accountability, oversight, vicarious liability, privacy, bias, and control.
Attendees will explore ways to evaluate agentic AI opportunities, where the most significant legal and operational risks arise, and how to build governance frameworks that capture the benefits of autonomous systems while maintaining appropriate human control and accountability.
