Shelter-in-place orders, work-from-home mandates, and school closures resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, have taken a toll on both men and women, who continue to cope with the tension between transformed jobs and full-time caregiving responsibilities. Governor Tim Walz has now made his much anticipated announcement regarding the return to school in Minnesota this fall, and schools across the state are slowly revealing their varied plans of in-person, hybrid and distance learning plans. Parents are struggling to make sense of an uncertain school year and those with even younger children are continuing their search for care options. While this is a burden often shared by all parents, statistical and anecdotal evidence demonstrates that women have been the hardest hit. Whether it is from increased unemployment or shouldering the greater share of home-schooling and child care, many women are scaling back or outright leaving their jobs to be more present for their families in this time of increased need for support. This choice is likely to have long-term effects on women’s careers and on the pipeline of female leadership. The speakers will discuss these challenges in light of the increasing uncertainties in the upcoming school year and search for inroads toward equitable results.
