Littler Named 2014 Recipient of the MCCA’s Thomas L. Sager Award for Firm’s Commitment to Diversity

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (March 14, 2014) – Littler, the world’s largest employment and labor law practice representing management, has been named the 2014 recipient of the Thomas L. Sager Award for the Midwest Region by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA). This marks the third time Littler has received the prestigious Sager Award, which is presented annually to law firms that have demonstrated a sustained commitment to diversity in their organizations. Littler previously won in 2011 in the Midwest Region and in 2009 for the Western Region.

“It is a tremendous honor to once again be recognized for Littler’s diversity program,” said Thomas Bender and Jeremy Roth, co-managing directors of the firm, in a joint statement. “Diversity is a critical element of Littler’s identity and we are continually working to expand and strengthen our diverse workforce while remaining fully committed to providing an inclusive, open and respectful culture.”

The Sager Award is named after DuPont Senior Vice President and General Counsel Thomas L. Sager, a widely-respected leader in diversity. Winners are selected based on various criteria including statistical data, recruitment, retention and mentoring and promotion methods, as well as collaborative endeavors with community and bar associations and innovative practices that result in practicable efforts to increase diversity. Only one winner is selected from each of five U.S. regions.

Littler was honored by the MCCA as the Midwest Region Award recipient at a luncheon on March 12, 2014 in Los Angeles. Natalie Pierce, co-chair of the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion Council, and Lisa “Lee” A. Schreter, Littler’s newly-appointed chairwoman of its board of directors, attended the ceremony. Schreter accepted the award on the firm’s behalf and in her acceptance speech, Schreter remarked, “We thank the MCCA for this award and Thomas Sager for being its inspiration. It means a great deal to Littler and I am confident that it will inspire us to continue our work in the service of opportunity, diversity and inclusion.”

Littler’s various diversity programs have positioned it as one of the leading firms in the area of diversity and inclusion. In addition to its internal programs, the firm’s Equal Employment Opportunity & Diversity Practice Group educates clients about the benefits of having a highly diverse workforce and guides them in making appropriate decisions regarding diversity strategies. The practice group has also developed a diversity and anti-discrimination training program, which was engineered by experts in discrimination law.

Littler has received numerous awards and accolades from a number of clients, media and industry organizations for its diversity efforts, including Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, Vault, the Human Rights Campaign, the Women in Law Empowerment Forum, Working Mother magazine, Law360, Multicultural Law magazine, Yale Law Women, Starbucks Coffee Company, Associated Builders and Contractors, the American Lawyer and Clear Channel Media, among others.
