LOS ANGELES (September 7, 2017) – Eugene C. Ryu, shareholder in the Downtown Los Angeles office of Littler, the world’s largest employment and labor law practice representing management, has been named “Alumnus of the Year” by the Korean American Bar Association of Northern California (KABANC). Ryu will be honored at KABANC’s 2017 Annual Gala on September 8.
“Gene is an integral part of Littler’s diversity and inclusion efforts, serving on the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion Council, as well as co-chairing the ‘Ohana affinity group,” said Tom Bender and Jeremy Roth, co-managing directors of Littler, in a joint statement. “He is an excellent example of the diversity and inclusion champions we have here at Littler, and we congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.”
The “Alumnus of the Year” award recognizes a KABANC member who has served as a role model for the Korean-American legal community, has offered continuous support for and significant contributions to KABANC and has demonstrated a commitment to Korean and other minority legal communities.
“I am honored to receive the ‘Alumnus of the Year’ award from KABANC,” said Ryu. “I am deeply committed to its mission of providing opportunities and promoting professional growth for both Korean-Americans and all Asian-Americans, and I look forward to an ongoing partnership with this outstanding organization.”
Ryu served on the KABANC board of directors for five years and led the pro bono committee, which held free law clinics biannually for the community. As a leader of ‘Ohana, Ryu has increased outreach to new Asian-American attorneys at Littler and has expanded mentoring and support for associates seeking elevation to shareholder status.
In his practice, Ryu provides advice and counseling to clients on a variety of labor and employment law matters, including discrimination and harassment, family and medical leave, wage and hour, and workplace safety and health. He represents employers throughout California in state and federal courts and before administrative agencies.
Ryu’s work with emerging growth companies, start-ups and entrepreneurs, led to the creation of Littler X-celerator™, a web-based toolkit for hiring and managing a workforce. Littler X-celerator was introduced in 2015 in California and has since expanded to Illinois.
Ryu earned his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, and his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley.
