Ana María Bigas-Kennerley’s focuses her practice on employee benefit plans and is a member of the Employee Benefit Practice group at Schuster Aguiló. She assists clients with the design, implementation, administration and compliance of qualified retirement plans. Her work in advising plan sponsors includes qualifying retirement plans under the Puerto Rico Internal Revenue Code of 2011, as amended, and other tax-related matters before the Puerto Rico Department of the Treasury. She assists clients with the voluntary plan correction program before the U. S. Department of Labor. Her experience includes the following:
- Establishing, qualifying, administering and terminating retirement plans
- Drafting plan documents, deeds of trust, and nonqualified deferred compensation arrangements
- Counseling employers on tax implications of employee benefit plans
- Inheritance and estate planning, including estate and gift tax provisions
Prior to joining Schuster Aguiló, Ana María served as assistant secretary of administrative appeals and as an administrative judge, in the Puerto Rico Department of Treasury. She assisted the legal department and the tax division of the Department of Justice in the research and preparation of motions related to tax deficiencies. Previously, she was an associate in the tax department at another firm.
