NOTE: Because the COVID-19 situation is dynamic, with new governmental measures each day, employers should consult with counsel for the latest developments and updated guidance on this topic.

On March 25, 2020, the Government of Canada announced the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) to support workers and businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CERB is a taxable benefit and open to workers regardless of their eligibility to receive Employment Insurance benefits. It will provide workers who qualify with $2,000 per month for up to four months.

The portal for accessing the CERB is set to be available in early April. A link to the Government of Canada’s official news release may be found here.

Littler will continue to monitor this development and provide further details as they become available.
