Employee Benefits – Challenges and Objectives for Employers in 2014 and Beyond

Employee benefits issues continue to confront employers daily. The Affordable Care Act has transformed the manner in which employer-sponsored healthcare plans are offered to employees and has forced employers to balance employee relations concerns with the crushing cost of group healthcare plans. Employers are facing a plethora of issues about the types of plans to offer, who to cover, and how to best avoid the many penalties contained in the law. As sponsors of retirement plans, employers have also recently had new issues to countenance: the IRS and the DOL are busy auditing plans more closely than ever before. The DOL has been aggressive in examining all aspects of plan governance, including how plan committees make decisions, how investment policies are implemented by plan fiduciaries and the amount of training provided to plan fiduciaries. And plan participants have jumped into the fray, with an increasing number of lawsuits challenging benefits communications, the investment choices provided to them in their 401(k) plans, and denials of claims for plan benefits of all sorts.

With this backdrop, Littler is pleased to present a 2014 Employee Benefits Summit in Atlanta, GA where we will address all of these issues and provide practical solutions for employers who are plan sponsors and administrators. We will discuss healthcare reform, with a focus on cost-saving strategies, and also offer strategies for retirement plan sponsors and fiduciaries to best insulate themselves from the threats posed by government agencies and plan participants. Additionally, Littler's benefits litigators will offer practice pointers on how to reduce critical and developing ERISA litigation risks that are actively being pursued in both government-sponsored and private litigation. Overall, the goal of the Summit is to provide an in-depth review of current issues, while providing employers/plan sponsors and administrators with perspective, insight, and practical advice with respect to the operation of their employee benefit plans.
