Employers are hounded daily with service-animal questions relating to accommodation obligations, legitimacy (the growing trend of fraudulent service dogs) and individuals’ rights. The ADA permits legitimate assistance dogs to accompany people with disabilities in all areas where members of the public may go, but a service dog is more than a vest – businesses and employers have the right to expect appropriate behavioral standards and the elimination of service dog fraud. In tandem with the leading provider of assistance dogs for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities (Canine Companions for Independence®), this Littler workshop goes “off leash” and will discuss and compare obligations under both the employment and public accommodations provisions of the ADA.
The workshop will also address facts and myths regarding service animals, and will review Canine Companions’ extensive assistance dog training and puppy raising programs that result in graduating specially trained labradors, golden retrievers, and lab golden crosses that can perform advanced tasks for their human charges. And no session like this would be complete without demonstrating the advanced commands a Canine Companions assistance dog provides for its human partner!
