John Kloosterman Appointed to the International Labour Organization’s Committee on Application of Standards

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (APRIL 26, 2012) - John Kloosterman, a shareholder at Littler Mendelson, P.C. (Littler), the nation’s largest employment and labor law firm representing management, has been appointed to the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Committee on the Application of Standards. He is the only U.S. management-side representative to the Committee, which reviews countries’ compliance with international labor standards and recommends actions to the United Nations.

The ILO is the United Nations agency responsible for drafting and overseeing international labor standards. It is the only ‘tripartite’ UN agency—it brings together representatives of governments, employers and workers to jointly shape policies and programs promoting fair labor standards. This unique arrangement gives the ILO an edge in incorporating ‘real world’ knowledge about employment and work. Vist the ILO website for more information.

Previously, Kloosterman was instrumental in negotiating an international labor standard—ILO Convention No. 189, the Domestic Work Convention (2011), which potentially affects the working conditions of millions of workers worldwide, and served as the employer member of the committee that drafted the final language of that Convention.

“This is a very prestigious position and we are proud that John has been selected to serve,” said Jennifer J. Walt, managing shareholder of Littler’s San Francisco office. “John joins a long list of Littler attorneys who are in positions of leadership within the legal and business communities, and his appointment to serve is a wonderful honor for both John and the firm.”

Kloosterman advises and defends a wide range of employers, from start-up companies to multi-national corporations, in all areas of labor and employment law, with an emphasis on international employment issues, class and collective actions, restrictive covenants and trade secrets and wage-hour issues.

He has been an author and contributing editor to several publications and treatises on international employment and labor law issues. He is a frequent speaker on employment and labor law topics at universities and law schools, including the University of California at Berkeley. He addresses business and professional organizations at conferences and is a television commentator on employment law issues.

Kloosterman has been named a Northern California Super Lawyer and is listed in the International Who’s Who of Management Labour and Employment Lawyers. He received his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School and his B.A., with honors, from Loyola University Chicago and attended University College London. He is admitted to practice in California and Wisconsin.
