Problems and Solutions in Identifying and Recording Work Time
Wednesday, June 5
- 7:00 AM PDT
Wage and hour compliance begins with accurately recording employees' work time – which is not as easy a task as it may first seem. Determining exactly when work time begins and ends poses sometimes difficult-to-resolve legal issues - security checks, obtaining assignments, picking up keys, uploading reports and even walking pose issues as to when compensable work time begins and ends. These issues can be compounded by the rounding of work time. And, practical issues may be posed by the location of time clocks, obtaining certifications of work and break time and the editing of time.
Here's what you will learn:
- What work-related activities can unexpectedly extend the workday - security checks, shift turnovers, donning and doffing, and other incidental activities?
- When can incidental work activities by considered so de minimis as not recordable work time?
- When can work time be rounded and when not?
- How should meal periods be recorded and what are the hazards of assuming meal periods are worked unless an exception is reported?
- What certifications of work time and meal and rest periods should be obtained?
- What safeguards should there be around supervisors' editing time entries?
This program will examine all of these issues and provide best practices by which to enhance compliance.
