This program is designed for in-house counsel, and human resources, loss prevention and security professionals.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the retail industry experiences the third-highest workplace violence victimization rate, after law enforcement and mental health professionals. In the last six months, stories about shootings in large malls have dominated the headlines too frequently.

The retail industry has unique issues and challenges to ensuring workplace safety. Stores that are open to the public—often in malls—make providing security extremely difficult. High turnover among employees makes it difficult to know just who your employees are. A retailer’s sheer number of stores and employees creates greater chances of workplace violence threats in many forms: robbery, assault, stalking, domestic violence, gang-related incidents, kidnapping, rape, robbery and murder. The perpetrators of workplace violence can be customers, robbers, co-workers, persons with whom employees have romantic relationships, and others. Incidents can be random or pre-meditated.

This discussion will focus exclusively on the issues unique to retail employers, participants will explore challenges they have faced, and share ideas and strategies that have proven successful.
