Training and Professional Development

Every Opportunity to Develop – As part of our overall goal to recruit and retain exceptional associates, we have an attorney dedicated to the recruitment, retention, and professional development of our associates. We offer high-quality, comprehensive training programs and additional opportunities to help our lawyers grow from beginning and mid-level to senior associates and shareholders. In addition to their educational and organizational value, these programs provide new attorneys with opportunities to meet one another and share ideas and experiences.

New Attorney Orientation (“Littler Academy”) – This 4-day annual training program is designed for all new and lateral associates. The program provides an extensive overview of the Firm’s operations and our key practice areas.

Associate Training Programs – This comprehensive training curriculum was devised with input from the Firm’s associates and addresses over 25 different topics, including:

  • Legal Writing – This 1½ day intensive program is offered to our junior associates.
  • Wage & Hour – An in-depth analysis of wage & hour law is provided to our mid-level associates during this 1½ day program.
  • Deposition Skills – This 2½ day program facilitated by the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) is offered to our mid-level associates.
  • Jury Trial Skills – For our senior associates, we offer a 3½ day jury trial skills program in conjunction with NITA.

Continuing Legal Education – Littler regularly offers continuing legal education seminars and programs designed to meet state licensing requirements and to further professional growth.

Training Accounts – Littler offers training accounts to allow our associates the opportunity to gain exposure to different areas of the Firm’s practice while still receiving “billable” credit. Available to associates in the first- through third-year classes, each eligible associate is provided up to 150 hours per year. This includes attending depositions, hearings, mediations, arbitrations, negotiations, trial, and other observational experiences.

Mentor Program – All first- through third-year associates are paired with a shareholder mentor who is responsible for monitoring the associate’s work and progress.

Reviews and Feedback – New associates are reviewed every six months during the first two years of employment. Thereafter, all associates are reviewed annually, on or around February 1st of each year.
